Loco for Locovore

With summer harvest in full season it was hard for Doniece Parson, owner of Mother Hubbards Restaurant in Buellton, to choose what she wanted to feature for her August Farm to Table Locavore Dinner on Saturday, August 29.
(Reservations must be made by Tuesday, Aug. 25.)

"There’s so much available and in season right now it’s hard to make some choices, especially when it came to dessert. We looked over our old menus and realized we’ve never done any poultry, mainly because we couldn’t find any in the area, but we have found a provider so we’re going to do a roasted half chicken this month," Parson announced.

The menu includes:

Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Figs

Watermelon Basil Salad with Honey Balsamic Dressing
Roasted Half Chicken with Lemons and Olives
Risotto with Summer Vegetables
Roasted Tomatoes on the Vine with Balsamic Vinegar

*Dessert is still in the works, there’s so much fresh fruit right now, but it most likely will be Roasted Fruit with Mascarpone Ice Cream*

The popular dinner was created because Parson wanted to support local farmers and ranchers. All of her ingredients, with exception to the rice in this month's menu, are sourced within 20 miles of the Santa Ynez Valley. locavore or localvore is a menu in which all the food is locally produced, not moved long distances to market, typically 100 miles or less.

"The Santa Ynez Valley is the best place to eat locavore because we have such a plethora of agriculture from fresh vegetables and fruits to meats from beef, pork and now poultry," Parson said.

Mother Hubbards offers an extensive breakfast menu with a wide range of omelets from the savory Californian and the light Montecito to the basic Denver with a few stops in between. Old fashioned basics like bacon and eggs with biscuits and gravy are to be found as well as a few surprises.

Lunch includes a wide array of sandwiches using breads from a local area baker, from staples such as a BLT intermixed with quality wraps and specialty sandwiches on Telera bread.

Mother Hubbards prides themselves on their use of local products whenever possible, such as they get their eggs are from a local producer who raises the chickens in a cage-free environment without the use of drugs or hormones. Most of their produce is from Synergy Organic Farm in Goleta and local Santa Ynez Valley farmers including Farm Stead just south of Buellton. Many of the herbs and some other produce comes from Parson's own garden.

"We are working in partnership with local ranchers and growers to expand our use of local, organic and sustainable foods.

Large groups of five people or more must make a deposit of 50 percent.

Mother Hubbards has been serving the Buellton and Santa Ynez Valley community since 1978. They are located at 373-A Avenue of Flags, Buellton.

Vanessa Loves Food and Buellton

Contributed Photo
The way local celebrity chef Vanessa Craig talks about food and how she prepares for each week of her popular pop up catering business Vanessa Loves Food, can make anyone's mouth water. Her eyes light up when she talks about her passion and her recent experience on "All Star Academy", a contest show on the Food Network which pairs home-cooks with celebrity chefs and after weeks of eliminations the winner gets $50,000.

The Santa Ynez Valley native and now Buellton resident talked about her journey to the show started back in her childhood as she grew up in Solvang. She spent a lot of time cooking for her siblings as her parents worked hard at full time jobs.

"Cooking makes me peaceful and feel good," she said.

Vanessa graduated from Santa Ynez Valley Union High School a year early in 1999 and started Santa Barbara City College. During her first year her step dad Leonard whom she loved dearly passed away unexpectedly and it threw a wrench in her schooling. She turned to her restaurant family and started working more in the kitchen learning from the chef at The Palace Restaurant in Santa Barbara.

"The chefs walked me through the dishes and how to set up and prepare for restaurant cooking. I learned how to make a restaurant quality bowl of pasta. Not just slap together noodles and sauce," Vanessa laughed.

Vanessa moved to Los Angeles and after a brief stint at fashion school made Vanessa realize cooking was where she wanted to be. She moved back to Santa Barbara and worked at Bouchon for owners Mitchell Sjerven and Amy Sachs.

"They became my second family and their style of menu blew my mind with the freshness and simplicity. It definitely leveled up my cooking skills and showed me an amazing way to run a restaurant," Vanessa said.

Vanessa ended up moving back to Los Angeles to live with her boyfriend at the time who was a musician. She didn't have a job for a few years but never gave up cooking and entertaining friends.

"I wanted to do something more and started Culinary Cuties, teaching kids how to cook, because I wanted to give kids those same good experiences in the kitchen I had when I was young," she said.

When her relationship ended she moved to Walnut Creek and worked at Ruth's Chris Steak House.

"My brother asked me to make his wedding cake and of course I did and that process of baking took me through so many different emotions. It solidified that being a chef was what I wanted," Vanessa said.

After a co-worker prompted her to sign up on the Food Network she laughed it off.

"A few months later I was watching the Food Network and decided to go for it. I submitted my application and waited. And waited. And waited," she laughed.

About nine months later and after moving back to Goleta Vanessa got a call from a producer for the channel.

"I thought it was a prank call at first and probably said things I shouldn't have," Vanessa said.

A week later she was in San Francisco taping an audition and nervous because she brought chicken picatta, her favorite dish she made with her step-dad Leonard.

"He was the reason I started cooking and I wanted to do this for him," she said.

While she was taping her auditions she decided to go out on the town with friends and met her now husband Sam at a karaoke bar.

"It was instant connection between us. He was visiting America from Melbourne and after a few days together I didn't want to leave. Of course at that same time I got a phone call saying I had to be in New York for the taping for 'All Star Academy' and I couldn't tell anybody," she said.

Sam ended up following Vanessa to New York and stayed for most of the filming. She said it was an unusual way to start a relationship especially since she was under the most pressure of her life, but somehow he was able to help her focus. All the other contestants were pseudo chaperones and the contestants who are mothers made sure Vanessa kept her head on straight.

"When I walked on set everything vanished. It was just me cooking and I was in my zen zone," she said.

Vanessa's mentor was Chef Michael Simon, most noteable from "Iron Chef" on the Food Network.

Chef Michael Simon mentoring Vanessa during the competition on the Food Network's "All Star Academy".
"Michael was just as cool in person as he is on TV. He is an intense chef but he is casual and approachable. I am so happy he chose me," Vanessa said.

She said her favorite dish she made was the "Surf 'n Turf" competition and she made carpaccio with a warm shrimp vinaigrette.

"It just stands out to me every time I think about the show. I can't believe I made that," she said.

All of the contestants lived in a hotel together with the production crew and became quite close. Vanessa still talks with most of the cast.

During the taping Vanessa became known for singing to her food and she always wore a pair of cowboy boots to honor her rural hometown.

After eight weeks it came down to Vanessa and Joseph Harris as the finalists.

"I was so bummed I didn't win but it was such an amazing experience and it just makes me want to be a chef that much more," she said.

Even though she came in runner-up it hasn't stopped her drive to make her passion for cooking full time a reality as she has started her own catering company Vanessa Loves Food.

"The money would have definitely been nice to start my own restaurant, but I love where I am at in my life right now and wouldn't change it," Vanessa said.

Her pop-up catering stand has become a popular afternoon treat at places such as Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company in their Buellton and Los Olivos locations, as well as Larner Vineyard and other venues for special private events.

"I wanted to start my career here because the Valley is such a special place and I have always been so supported here. Buellton is becoming the happening place to be and I am excited to do events here. I can't wait until the next chapter and hopefully open a restaurant in a few years or sooner," she exclaimed.

Her next chapter also starts as a wife as a trip to visit Sam in Australia, and they ended up getting married, and yes she wore her cowboy boots at the ceremony.

For updates of where she will be popping up and the menu of the week follow her social media pages on Facebook - Instagram and Twitter.

Make sure you come out to the 12th annual “Buellton BBQ Bonanza,”, that draws some of the biggest crowds of any event in the city, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at River View Park.

"The BBQ Bonanza is a just a great fun, family day. It's about getting the community together for an old time meet and greet," said Kyle Abello, recreation coordinator for the City of Buellton.

This event is free for our community in the park at the south end of Sycamore Drive, which includes food and drinks provided by the city, live music, games for kids (and adults), demonstrations from local businesses, a prize raffle and booths hosted by local organizations and businesses.

"From businesses to non-profits coming out to let people know what they do and how they can get involved to the music and games for kids, it's nice to have a relaxing atmosphere to bring everyone together to celebrate the things that make Buellton such a great place to live and work," Abello added.

People Helping People Polo Classic

The sounds of horses hooves, clacking of polo mallets and cheers from the crowds filled the air at Circle JB Polo Ranch in Buellton on Saturday afternoon as the fourth annual People Helping People (PHP) Polo Classic played out. The event is more than just a fun afternoon of watching a polo match and wearing nice attire, as it is one of the largest fundraisers PHP puts together to garner monies to support their many wonderful programs that help the Santa Ynez Valley community.

"This helps us keep our programs going such as housing and food assistance for low-income families here, some of which live in Buellton. We raise roughly $150,000 from this event that goes directly back into our community," said Dean Palius, executive director of PHP.

The Polo Classic started when People Helping People were contacted by Joel and Charlotte Baker a few years ago stating they wanted to help the organization by suggesting they host a polo match, according to Palius.

"I brought the idea before the board and they loved it. Every year just gets better and better and we have some of the biggest names in the sport volunteering to play which is wonderful," Palius said.

The Buellton Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau said the Polo Classic has become one of the city's signature events and are always happy to attend.

We are fortunate to have such a unique venue in Circle JB Polo Ranch to hold this fabulous event.  We truly appreciate People Helping People and the work they do for our community and enjoy the opportunity to work with them," said Kathy Vreeland, executive director of the chamber and visitor's bureau.

The Polo Classic featured two games this year the first being the Preliminary Match which tied,  featuring up and coming polo players. The Red team had Athena Malin, Jillian Tietje and Alfonso Giannico and the Blue team had Mathew Gonzales, Nico Escobar and Lucas Escobar.

The second game was made up of Team USA - represented by three of the players that took home silver in the 2015 Polo World Championships in Santiago, Chile.
Team USA's roster was Remy Muller, Patrick Uretz and Jesse Bray who played against The Masters, comprised of Santa Ynez Valley local Andy Busch, an avid player and he recently played with Prince William in 2011 at the Santa Barbara Polo Club; Guillermo Graciada Jr., who learned to ride at age two and has 16 U.S. Open Victories and is in the Polo Hall of Fame holding the highest ranking of 10 goals for 21 years; and Joel Baker, owner of Circle JB Polo Ranch, who ranked as one of the top ten polo players in the country and recently coached Team USA in the World Championships.

Team USA won against The Masters in a great match which was packed with more than 600 people in attendance.

The event was partly sponsored by Happy Canyon Vineyards, owned by the Barrack family, whose son TJ Barrack usually competes in the event. This year surgery prevented him from playing however he was rooting on the sidelines.

"For me this is about combining my two passions of polo and wine and we get to give back to our community. We think People Helping People are doing fantastic work in the valley and we are grateful to help in our own way," Barrack said.

There was almost as much activity off the field as audience members on the General admission side enjoyed a barbecue lunch provided by the Buellton Rotary Club and tacos by the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott. Those on the VIP side were treated to a catered lunch provided by Field to Table and ladies participated in a hat contest.
